How to Transport MJ Into a Prohibited State Without Getting Caught
Now that Illinois has allowed the sale of MJ to adults 21 and over for half a year, there’s no doubt that cannabis enthusiasts from neighboring states are flocking there to get their hands on the product hassle-free. In fact, state law allows out-of-state adults to purchase MJ at any retail dispensary as long as they have a valid photo ID. These buyers can purchase up to half the amount allowed for Illinois residents—that is, 15 grams of MJ. However, finding a place to actually use it can be tricky. It’s not recommended to return to your home state with this kind of cargo.
Remember: transporting any amount of MJ across state lines is considered drug trafficking. Each state has its own penalties, which can range from hefty fines to jail time. Still, many of you will take the risk and try to bring MJ home. We’ve put together a short list of rules you should follow if you decide to engage in this illegal activity.
Travel Only in a Clean Car
Certain stereotypes exist for a reason. Driving to Illinois in a beat-up car covered in Grateful Dead stickers is a surefire way to attract police attention. It’s best to make the trip in a relatively new, well-maintained vehicle without any window stickers or decals that might tip off an officer that you’re a cannabis fan.
Your entire appearance should say: “Officer, I have a job, I pay my taxes, I’m a law-abiding citizen, and I have nothing to do with MJ.” Make sure your vehicle is in perfect working order—all lights and signals should function properly. Keep the interior spotless. Cops rarely search clean cars.
Get rid of fast food bags, trash on the floor, clothes, and anything else usually left on the back seat. The officer shouldn’t have the slightest reason to suspect there’s MJ in your car. A clean car creates the illusion that it’s driven by someone with a clean conscience. While this isn’t a 100% guarantee, it definitely helps.
Don’t Smoke MJ in the Car
Sure, a road trip is more fun with a little buzz, since it makes the monotony easier to handle. But when you’re illegally transporting any amount of MJ from a green state to a prohibited one, this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
If a police officer stops you for any reason (crossing the center line, speeding), and smells weed, they will definitely search your car. If you can’t avoid the trip, at least make sure there’s no reason for the cop to even think that MJ was smoked in the car.
Strictly Follow Traffic Laws
This may seem obvious, but it’s important to stress: anyone carrying MJ should not be behind the wheel. Travel like a responsible citizen and you’ll be fine.
It’s Better to Carry Edibles or Vape Products
Many people prefer buds, but they have a very strong smell that all cops know how to recognize. The scent of MJ will leak out no matter where you hide it. Even if you think there’s no smell (you’ve just gotten used to it), a cop can still sniff it out and will likely call in a K-9 unit.
Our advice: travel only with edibles or “loaded” vape devices. They don’t smell as much as raw buds and are less noticeable.
