How to Make MJ Butter: Step-by-Step Recipe
This guide will walk you through the process of making MJ butter using all parts of the plant. Please note: This article is for informational purposes only.
Ingredients and Supplies Needed
- MJ plant material: all parts can be used, including leaves, upper leaves, immature buds (the ones on the lower branches that haven’t fully matured), thin stems, and even the bark from the stalks.
- Butter (choose a high-quality brand, but margarine can be used if you’re on a budget)
- Cheesecloth (available at most pharmacies)
- Tap water and a separate kettle of boiling water
- Pot
- Rubber gloves and thick wool gloves
- Freezer
Step 1: Grind the Plant Material
Grind the dried plant material into a fine powder. An old coffee grinder works well for this step.
Step 2: Prepare the Butter Mixture
Boil water in a pot (about 1.5–2 liters, no exact measurement needed). Add a block of butter and wait for it to melt. Then, add the ground plant material. The ideal ratio, determined by experience, is 120 grams of plant material per 200 grams of butter.
Step 3: Simmer the Mixture
Simmer on low heat for one hour. The mixture should not boil vigorously—just a gentle bubbling in the middle. Stir occasionally.
Step 4: Strain and Extract the Butter
This is the most important and potentially hazardous step. After an hour of simmering, place cheesecloth in another pot and pour the mixture (including the plant pulp and water) into it. Put on thick wool gloves with rubber gloves over them. Make sure you have boiling water ready in the kettle.
Gather the cheesecloth with the plant pulp and start squeezing out the liquid. This step is crucial for maximizing your butter yield. Squeeze until the cheesecloth creaks, but be careful—hot butter and water can burn even through gloves. Open the cheesecloth and pour boiling water over the pulp, then wrap it up and squeeze again. When no more liquid drips out, discard the pulp and let the pot cool. After 3–4 hours, place the pot in the freezer overnight.
In the morning, a green layer will have formed on top—this is your MJ butter. Use a knife to separate it; it should come off easily. You can use this butter in any baking recipe that calls for regular butter.
Notes and Tips
- The average dose per person is 3 to 5 grams of butter. Before making dough, weigh the butter to determine how many servings your batch will yield.
- Bake at 250–320°F (120–160°C). It will take longer than standard recipes. This is important because at 356°F (180°C), THC transforms into CBD, which will result in a sedative effect and headache instead of happiness and euphoria.
