Food Delivery with a Surprise: DoorDash Customer in Ohio Receives Cannabis in Order

Food Delivery with a Surprise in Columbus, Ohio

On August 9, a man from Columbus, Ohio, ordered food through the DoorDash delivery service and got more than he bargained for. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, discovered a small bag of marijuana at the bottom of his delivery bag, right next to a plastic fork. He shared the story with ABC6.

The delivery driver quickly returned, claiming he had mixed up the orders and accidentally gave the man a package meant for his friend. Instead of simply exchanging the bags, the customer called the police and filed a complaint with DoorDash. As evidence, he provided a photo showing the baggie, which was decorated with images of alien heads.

DoorDash Responds to the Incident

DoorDash immediately blocked the delivery driver involved, telling the customer that they do not condone such behavior and that the driver would never be allowed to deliver for DoorDash again. It remains unclear at what point the cannabis ended up in the bag—whether it was the driver’s fault or an issue with the company itself.

Rumors about DoorDash being involved with cannabis deliveries first surfaced on Twitter, as reported by Benzinga in April of this year. Four years earlier, at the 2018 Brainstorm Tech conference organized by Fortune, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu said the company had considered the idea of cannabis delivery but had no immediate plans to pursue it in the United States. In April of last year, Forbes reported that Canadian cannabis retailer Superette partnered with DoorDash Inc. to offer pickup from its Toronto locations.
