Common Behavior Types in Cannabis Culture

Recently, marijuana.com published a fun list of the 10 most common behavior types found among cannabis users. It’s no secret that sharing cannabis can bring people closer together. Still, every enthusiast maintains their individuality: a smoker’s personality and outlook on life greatly influence their behavior and consumption habits.

The Snob

The “elite” smoker would call even weed handed to them by Jack Herer himself unimpressive. There’s no point trying to convince them otherwise. Excellent strain characteristics or worldwide popularity aren’t convincing arguments for these people—they’ll always find something to criticize. The snob would never use a homemade bong, and even a simple pipe probably won’t do. Their smoking device must be at least gold-plated or encrusted with Swarovski crystals. While snobs often own truly unique, luxurious accessories, their pretentiousness can kill the vibe in an instant. Seriously, guys—it’s just weed!

The Cool Parent

Don’t worry, you won’t have to hide your stash. You don’t even need to use eye drops. But that’s only if your friend has a “cool parent.” They know what to do with plastic bottles and how to roll a joint. They won’t lecture you, but will share tons of wild stories from their youth. And, of course, they’ll join in. Smoking with an older family member is unforgettable, if only because seeing an adult high is a truly unique sight. But don’t make fun of them—you might find yourself in their shoes one day.

The Hippie

Although the heyday of the hippie movement is long gone, plenty of young people still embrace this lifestyle. Just look at modern hipsters—their philosophy isn’t much different from that of the hippies. The hippie smoker will try anything offered and will likely treat the group to some drumming on an instrument brought back from a third-world country. Vegetarian food, natural-fiber clothing, and late-1960s music complete the picture.

The Athlete

The athlete is convinced that their achievements are largely thanks to “the mighty herb.” Before every workout, competition, or game, they just have to get high to “clear their mind and focus.” Cannabis helps them calm their nerves, avoid stress, and boost their confidence. Many sports stars (especially in extreme sports) use cannabis between events. While it’s hard to imagine a worse idea than smoking before a marathon, athletes claim that concentrates and sprays work wonders. Experienced users note that they only started using cannabis between workouts and competitions after learning about its effects during their free time.

The Moocher

This is one of the most common types, embodying the worst stereotypes about cannabis lovers. Yes, cannabis culture encourages sharing, but someone who gets high at others’ expense every day is a real problem. The moocher almost never has money for weed, but is often the first to suggest using it. They try to take the deepest hits or “forget” to pass the joint. When their “sponsors” run out of patience and suggest they buy some for a change, the moocher claims they don’t need to, since they only smoke “for company.” The worst kind of moocher is a best friend, since it’s awkward to call them out.

The Expert

This is the “sommelier” of the cannabis world. It seems like they have a degree in weed and everything related to it. The expert claims they can spot good weed at a glance. They’re sure their smoking skills are beyond ordinary. They laugh at those who smoke traditional dry herb, ignoring extraction methods. They know everything about processing and consuming cannabis. Sure, they can share lots of interesting facts and answer almost any question. But most people find know-it-alls like this pretty annoying.

The Newbie

Unlike the experts, newbies have no idea what the difference is between sativa and indica or how much a box costs. Smoking with someone who’s never done it before can be fun the first time, but it’s also a big responsibility. Beginners can be exhausting, and their lack of basic cannabis knowledge can be irritating. It takes a lot of patience to connect with someone who doesn’t know the basics. In these cases, it helps to remember your own “first time.”

The Coach

“You’re packing it wrong.” “You put too much water in the bong.” “You need to hold your breath.” The coach can wear anyone out with their constant advice before you even take your first hit. Constructive criticism is fine and can even be helpful, but not everyone likes being told how to do things. The coach usually thinks their experience is invaluable and can’t wait to share their wisdom. This isn’t so bad if there are newbies around who need guidance, but that’s rare. Most of the time, the coach’s advice is unwanted.

The Philosopher

To smoke or not to smoke—that is the question. The philosopher usually gets high faster than anyone else, and cannabis not only relaxes them but also sends them into deep existential thought. In this state, they might ponder questions like “Is there life after death?” or “Why was Pluto demoted from planet status?” They just have to share all their thoughts out loud. Deep conversations about the meaning of life and other eternal questions are a big part of cannabis culture, but a 90-minute lecture on dolphin social life isn’t exactly what you want to hear when you ask, “What time is it?”

The Storyteller

Everyone loves a good story, but there’s a time and place for everything. The storyteller just can’t be stopped. Once they get high, the words flow endlessly, regardless of whether anyone wants to listen. The most annoying thing is when the storyteller holds a lit joint and keeps talking while the weed burns away.

Of course, there are many more behavior types in cannabis culture beyond those listed above. Recognizing your future partner’s personality type in time can help you avoid awkward situations. After all, cannabis is associated with positive energy, calm, and peace for a reason.
