Cannabis Use for Insomnia Among Canadian Cancer Patients: Study Findings

About a Quarter of Canadian Cancer Patients Use Cannabis to Combat Insomnia

According to a study published in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship: Research and Practice, about a quarter of Canadians who use cannabis during cancer treatment do so specifically to address insomnia. The authors cite survey data from 1,400 patients, with approximately 24% reporting that cannabis was highly effective in helping them manage insomnia during treatment and disease progression.

Overall, more than two-thirds of cancer patients living in Canada use cannabis as part of their therapy. Most respondents reported that cannabis effectively alleviates discomfort and bodily pain, reduces muscle spasticity, improves sleep and digestion, prevents nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, and boosts overall well-being.

CBD Products and Insomnia in the General Population

Another report on a similar topic notes that a significant portion of the adult population in Canada may use CBD-containing cannabis and related products as a remedy for insomnia and poor sleep quality. However, it is difficult to determine the exact number of users due to the widespread availability of CBD oils through various non-specialized stores, which do not track sales.
