Cannabis District Planned for Kansas City Suburbs

Private Company Plans Cannabis District in Kansas City

Besa Hospitality Group (BHG), a Missouri-based hospitality company, recently announced plans to develop a “cannabis district” in the suburbs of Kansas City, along the banks of the Missouri River. According to company representatives, this project has been in development for some time, but only became feasible after residents of the region approved comprehensive cannabis reform in a public referendum held earlier this month.

What Will the Cannabis District Include?

The “cannabis district” is envisioned as a dedicated entertainment complex where cannabis consumption will be permitted. The proposed site, located in the River Bend community, will feature a 14,000-seat concert amphitheater, a festival ground, two indoor concert halls, and a conference center for hosting various themed events and celebrations. In addition to cannabis retail outlets, the complex will also include shops and restaurants. As expected, designated areas for cannabis consumption will be available throughout all public spaces in the complex.

Suppliers and Project Goals

The complex, named the “Smokey River Entertainment District,” will be supplied by BesaMe Wellness, a local medical cannabis producer. “We expect this complex to become a magnet for tourists from across the country, and we hope it will help normalize attitudes toward cannabis and its use among Missouri residents,” said Joey Pentozzi, Vice President of Marketing at BHG. “Of course, first and foremost, the facility is an entertainment center. The cannabis consumption areas are a unique feature that sets us apart from other similar venues in the region.”

Timeline and Future Plans

The complex is expected to be partially operational by mid-spring next year, with full completion planned for spring 2024. Company representatives hope to attract both regional and national theater troupes, musicians, and other performers for regular shows at the venue. The project’s creators also aim to bring in new brands and sponsors from the cannabis industry as it continues to develop in the region. Currently, only companies producing therapeutic cannabis are licensed to operate, and the first recreational producers are not expected to appear in the area before next spring.
