Argentina Legalizes Medical Marijuana

The Argentine government has officially legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Now, it is permitted to cultivate marijuana, produce marijuana-based products (both privately and by the state), and purchase them at pharmacies for medical use. The government also plans to encourage research related to this plant.

How Patients Can Access Medical Marijuana

Patients can now register with the “Cannabis Program Registry” (ReProCann) to obtain permission to grow marijuana for their own needs. This authorization can also be obtained on behalf of the patient by relatives, third parties, or non-profit organizations.

Support from Advocacy Groups

“We can only be glad that, in the current situation, the national government has listened to society’s request and recognized that marijuana is not just a scourge, but a solution for many people,” said Valeria Saleh, founder and president of the non-profit organization Mamá Cultiva. This organization, which brings together mothers who support traditional medicine, has advocated for the legalization of medical marijuana for several years.

Experience from other countries that have legalized the cultivation of marijuana for medical purposes suggests that the next step may be the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. Marijuana is already fully legalized in Uruguay, several U.S. states, and Canada. In Russia, marijuana remains on the list of banned substances.
