Tor Browser 8.5.1 Release: Enhanced Privacy and Security Updates

Tor Browser 8.5.1 Release

A new version of Tor Browser, 8.5.1, is now available. This browser is designed to provide anonymity, security, and privacy for its users. All traffic is routed exclusively through the Tor network, making it impossible to connect directly via the system’s standard network connection. This prevents tracking of the user’s real IP address. However, in the event of a browser compromise, attackers could potentially access system network settings. For complete protection against possible leaks, it is recommended to use additional products such as Whonix.

Tor Browser builds are available for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android.

What’s New in Version 8.5.1

  • Fixed bugs discovered since the release of Tor Browser 8.5.
  • Eliminated a browser fingerprinting vector via WebGL related to the use of the readPixels() function, which could be used to assess rendering differences across various graphics cards and drivers.
  • In this release, readPixels is disabled for the web context. When using the medium security level, WebGL playback now requires an explicit click.
  • Updated bundled extensions:
    • Torbutton 2.1.10
    • NoScript 10.6.2
    • HTTPS Everywhere 2019.5.13
