Cheap and Easy Way to Protect Your Car from Theft

Truck Driver Shares Inexpensive Car Theft Prevention Method

Car thieves can intercept the signal from a key fob to unlock and steal vehicles. A truck driver from the United Kingdom has come up with a simple yet highly effective way to protect vehicles equipped with keyless entry systems from being stolen.

In his video, 43-year-old Adam Farmiloe demonstrated how a regular soda can could be used to block the signal from a device that hackers use to remotely control a car. The driver simply placed his key fob inside an empty cola can, and his truck stopped receiving signals. This means that criminals would not be able to intercept the key fob’s signal and steal the vehicle.

In this case, the empty soda can acted as a Faraday cage. “People recommend wrapping your key fob in foil, but it’s pretty thin, and cans are made from the same material,” the video’s creator noted. Even though the top of the can was cut off, the signal was still blocked.

The issue of car theft by intercepting key fob signals has previously affected Volkswagen Group multiple times. Tesla has also warned its customers about this possibility.
