UK May Replace Tanks with Cyber Weapons

UK Considers Replacing Tanks with Cyber Weapons

The UK government is considering phasing out its aging fleet of armored vehicles after the Ministry of Defence called for greater investment in cyber weapons, space, and other advanced technologies.

According to Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup, who spoke to The Times, the armed forces should not be seen as an “easy option” for budget cuts during the current government review of defense and security. This review could also lead to significant reductions in troop numbers and the closure of some air bases.

Modernizing the UK’s aging fleet—which includes 227 Challenger 2 tanks and 388 Warrior armored vehicles—would require a massive financial investment. While the Ministry of Defence’s budget is currently capped at 2% of GDP, the UK’s GDP is expected to shrink significantly due to the ongoing economic downturn.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has previously denied plans to reduce the overall size of the army. However, a source told The Times that “bold decisions” are needed to balance defense interests and address new threats facing the UK.

No final decision has been made yet, and various options are being considered, including upgrading the existing tanks and armored vehicles or purchasing Leopard 2 tanks from Germany. If the Challenger tanks are retired, they will be sent to storage bases.
