Russia to Launch Social Media Surveillance System for Criminals

Russia Plans Social Media Surveillance System for Criminals

The recent tragedy at a Kazan gymnasium has highlighted the need for increased monitoring of information appearing on the internet. In response, Russia may soon introduce a special system to track criminals online.

According to Igor Bederov, an expert at the SafeNet Engineering Center of the National Technology Initiative (NTI), specialists will investigate internet crimes using a unified Automated Workstation (AWS). In an interview with RIA Novosti, Bederov explained:

“As part of the SafeNet program, we are proposing that law enforcement agencies develop a unified automated workstation (AWS) for specialists investigating internet crimes. This system will automate and standardize the collection and analysis of information based on geolocation, name, nickname, phone number, email address, IP address, domain, and other user identifiers online. Law enforcement officers could upload any known data about a suspect into the system, and the AWS would then independently identify, track, and find additional contacts for that individual.”

The attack at the Kazan gymnasium occurred on the morning of May 11. Nineteen-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviev opened fire on students and teachers, resulting in nine deaths and over twenty injuries.
