Oscar Ceremony Gift Bags Feature THC-Infused Chocolates
Every year, attendees of the prestigious Academy Awards ceremony—better known as the Oscars—receive exclusive gift bags from event organizers. These bags typically contain a variety of high-end confectionery and cosmetic products, with a total value of around $100,000. This year, for the first time, the gift bags included products featuring psychoactive cannabinoid extracts.
The standard gift set featured chocolate candies containing approximately 10 milligrams of THC. Notable recipients of these unique treats included Glenn Close, Regina King, Melissa McCarthy, and Mahershala Ali. The product, made by Coda Signature, consists of chocolate truffles infused with a dose of THC extract. According to the company’s website, these truffles allow recipients to “indulge in the sophisticated flavors of premium chocolate” while also “relaxing tense nerves.” The company recommends starting with just one piece, which contains about 1–5 milligrams of THC.
Alternative Gifts and Event Organization
Guests who chose not to accept the THC-infused chocolates received a facial moisturizer from High Beauty, which contains natural sativa seed extracts without significant psychoactive effects.
It’s important to note that the Academy itself is not involved in organizing the gift bags. The idea for these unusual gifts comes from a private organization known as the Oscar Ceremony Gift Committee, which has previously clashed with the Academy over intellectual property rights.
In addition to cannabis-related products, this year’s nominee gift bags included a range of other intriguing items, from expensive cruise and spa vouchers to complimentary invitations for private psychological sessions aimed at overcoming “personal phobias,” as well as a statuette of a smiling plunger emoji character.
According to a representative of the organizing committee, each company pays about $4,000 for the right to include one of their products in a single gift bag, gaining publicity and advertising value from the event.
