Norway to Decriminalize Drug Possession

Norway to Remove Criminal Penalties for Drug Possession

The Norwegian government has announced plans to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use. This move follows recommendations from the United Nations and the World Health Organization, according to Norway’s Ministry of Health.

Under the proposed changes, drug use, as well as the purchase and possession of small quantities of drugs for personal use, will no longer be subject to criminal penalties. While these actions will remain illegal, they will not be punishable by law.

If someone is found with more than the permitted amount of illegal substances, the police will have the right to confiscate the drugs. In such cases, the individual will be required to report to a municipal counseling service.

“This reform is a historic shift in Norwegian drug policy,” said Minister of Health Bent Høie. “It’s time to replace punishment with help.”
