China Unveils 500-Megapixel “Super Camera” for Crowd Surveillance
China has developed a 500-megapixel “super camera” capable of recognizing individuals in large crowds, according to a report by Global Times. The facial recognition system was designed with national defense, military, and public security in mind. It is expected to be used at military bases, satellite launch sites, and border security checkpoints to prevent unauthorized access by suspicious individuals or objects.
The report also notes that the super camera can record video at the same ultra-high resolution as its photographs, thanks to two specialized chips developed by the same team of scientists.
Privacy Concerns Raised by Experts
Experts have warned that deploying such camera systems could lead to violations of personal privacy. Dr. Wang Peiji, a PhD from the School of Astronautics at Harbin Institute of Technology, told Global Times that the existing surveillance systems are already sufficient for ensuring public safety. He also pointed out that creating a new system would be an expensive project with only marginal benefits.
