How CBD Blocks Paranoia Caused by THC: New Scientific Findings

Scientists Discover How CBD Blocks Paranoia Induced by THC

Many people are familiar with the unpleasant state that can follow THC consumption, when paranoid thoughts take over the mind, leading to strange behavior or, at best, making it hard to relax and enjoy the experience. Thanks to recent research, scientists have suggested that CBD may help reduce potential anxiety after smoking THC.

A study conducted on rats found that THC stimulates a molecule in the hippocampus—the part of the human brain responsible for memory and learning. Activation of this molecule can trigger side effects such as anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors.

Researchers then gave the rats both CBD and THC at the same time and observed lower levels of anxiety and paranoia. Additionally, the molecule in the hippocampus, called extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), maintained a normal level of activity. In simple terms, CBD blocked the negative side effects that THC usually causes.

“Our results are important for prescribing cannabis and for long-term treatment. For example, for people who are more prone to the side effects of cannabis, it is critically important to recommend strains with high CBD and low THC content,” said researcher and professor Steven Laviolette.

Interestingly, the scientists did not observe a decrease in ERK levels or anxiety when only CBD was administered. Based on these findings, the researchers state that CBD and THC work best together.
