4,500 Gift Certificates Stolen from Detsky Mir in Cyberattack

Russian media have reported that the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (IC RF) is investigating the theft of nearly 4,500 gift certificates and gift cards from the Detsky Mir retail chain.

According to RIA Novosti, which reviewed the case materials, the IC RF is currently conducting an investigation into a cyberattack on Detsky Mir. During this attack, unknown individuals managed to gain access to prepaid certificates and cards belonging to other people.

Investigators state that the perpetrators connected to the Detsky Mir website in an unspecified manner and โ€œused computer programs specifically designed to neutralize computer information protection tools.โ€

โ€œDuring these connections, the [perpetrators] selected values in the form of numbers and PIN codes for 4,459 prepaid electronic gift certificates and gift cards of PJSC Detsky Mir stored electronically. These are electronic information carriers that confirm the holderโ€™s right to make purchases,โ€ the case materials state.

As a result of this incident, a criminal case has been opened under Part 4 of Article 159.6 (Fraud in the Field of Computer Information) and Part 2 of Article 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Use of Malicious Computer Programs).

The investigation is being handled by the Cybercrime and High Technology Crime Investigation Department of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
