Telegram Rises to Second Place Among Most Downloaded Apps in the US
From Wednesday to Sunday, the Telegram messenger was downloaded more than 545,000 times in the United States, which is three times higher than the number of downloads during the same period the previous week.
This surge in popularity is linked to the blocking of Donald Trump’s accounts on social networks and the shutdown of Parler, a social network popular among supporters of the former US president.
Another reason for Telegram’s growth is the new privacy policy introduced by WhatsApp, which states that the app will collect user data for the Facebook family of apps.
After WhatsApp’s policy change, Telegram founder Pavel Durov commented on the accelerated “exodus” of users to Telegram. According to him, at the same time, paid bots began spreading fake news about Telegram and biased information about WhatsApp.
