Turning Mistakes Into Experience: A Practical Technique
I’d like to share a method that will teach you how to turn mistakes and failures into valuable experience and knowledge, helping you achieve success and reach your goals. This is an incredibly powerful and effective way to work with setbacks. By using this technique, you can quickly gain invaluable experience and use it for constructive purposes.
In my work, I often have to remind people that making mistakes is normal, and there’s no point in getting upset when we fail. It’s precisely through mistakes that we grow and learn new things. Think about it: very few people learn from their successful projects. When we succeed, we celebrate and rarely reflect on why things went well. But when we make a mistake, we immediately start analyzing and learning at a rapid pace.
“Success is a poor teacher—it teaches nothing.”
The “Constructive Experience” Technique
- Take a sheet of paper and a pen.
You’ll need 15–20 minutes of quiet time for reflection. - Step 1: Write down what happened.
Simply record the facts of what occurred. At this stage, it’s important to set aside any negative emotions you may have about the situation. Staying calm about the result is crucial—it will help you get the most out of this exercise. - Step 2: Extract constructive experience.
Ask yourself two questions and write down your answers:- First question: What positive thing did I learn from this result?
- Second question: What weakness in my actions (plans, system) did this situation reveal?
Ask yourself these questions repeatedly until you have at least seven answers. The more answers you find, the better. Look at your mistake from different angles and keep digging until you feel inspired and satisfied with your insights and new experience. Write down all your answers. Spend at least 10 minutes on this step.
- Step 3: Project into the future.
By answering the two questions in this step, you’ll be able to prevent many similar mistakes and misunderstandings in the future.- Question 1: What do I need to learn or do today so that I get the results I want in the future?
- Question 2: What advice can I give myself for the future to achieve the results I want?
Answer these questions and write them down.
How to Practice the “Constructive Experience” Technique
- Always do this exercise in writing!
- Before you start, remind yourself that you are about to gain new, valuable experience—and it’s definitely there!
- I recommend using this technique for three months, starting today. Why three months? That’s how long it takes for your mind to get used to automatically analyzing all your experiences and immediately drawing useful, constructive conclusions.
