US Court Orders Russian Hacker to Pay Nearly $20 Million
A document has appeared in the electronic database of the US court system stating that Russian citizen Andrey Tyurin, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison, has been ordered to pay almost $20 million in restitution to his victims.
According to the court ruling, Andrey Tyurin from Russia “must pay restitution to the victims in the total amount of $19,952,861.” The sentence was handed down in January 2021, and Tyurin pleaded guilty. Investigators say Tyurin was involved in the largest theft of personal data from bank and brokerage clients in US history. He gained access to information on more than 80 million clients of JPMorgan Chase & Co, Dow Jones & Co, Fidelity Investments, E-Trade Financial, and other financial institutions.
In his final statement at the January 2021 trial, the 37-year-old defendant admitted that he “was involved in illegal activities” and expressed remorse for his actions.
