Russian Security Council Engages Bloggers to Combat Online Threats

The Russian Security Council has addressed the issue of terrorists using the internet to spread their ideology, recruit new members, and finance related organizations. As a result, the Council concluded that law enforcement agencies need to strengthen their cooperation with well-known bloggers.

Recently, a session of the scientific council section under the Russian Security Council was held, where the increasingly active use of modern information and telecommunication services by international terrorist organizations was discussed, according to the Security Council’s website.

The press release states that internet resources and communication tools are being used by terrorist ideologists for destructive psychological influence on citizens, recruitment into terrorist structures, incitement to terrorist actions, financing and coordinating terrorist activities, and distributing instructions for committing terrorist acts.

In this regard, Security Council experts discussed “regulatory, organizational, and technical measures to ensure the timely detection and blocking of such materials on the internet, as well as identifying and holding accountable those involved in their distribution.”

“Special attention was given to the issues of social and psychological protection of Russian citizens from destructive information,” the Security Council reported. “It was proposed to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies and well-known bloggers, civil society institutions, including socially-oriented non-profit organizations, that are ready to support efforts to combat the spread of terrorist ideology in the information space.”
