Hackers Steal $45,000 in Crypto from Defunct Cryptopia Exchange

Hackers Withdraw $45,000 in Crypto from Inactive Cryptopia Exchange

Hackers have withdrawn crypto assets from the New Zealand-based Bitcoin exchange Cryptopia, which has been inactive since 2019 and is currently undergoing liquidation. This was reported by Stuff.

According to the publication, the American company Stakenet received a notification on February 1 about the withdrawal of XSN tokens worth 62,000 New Zealand dollars ($45,000) from a cold wallet. The wallet had not been used since the Cryptopia hack in January 2019. It holds crypto assets with a total value of $1.97 million.

The liquidator, Grant Thornton, stated that the withdrawal was unauthorized and that the incident is under investigation.

β€œIf this unauthorized transaction occurred under the supervision of Grant Thornton, the company will have to explain why it failed to ensure the security of users’ funds,” Stakenet representatives said.

It is worth noting that in December, Grant Thornton began accepting claims for fund returns from Cryptopia account holders.
