Sberbank: Data of 90% of Russian Adults Publicly Available

Sberbank Reports Data of 90% of Russian Adults Is Publicly Accessible

Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Board at Sberbank, stated at the SOC Forum that, according to Sberbank’s estimates, about 3.5 billion records containing personal data of Russian citizens are publicly available. This means information on approximately 90% of the adult population of Russia is accessible online.

Based on Sberbank’s analysis conducted at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, the main sources of data leaks are online stores and medical institutions. Kuznetsov noted that, contrary to popular belief, credit organizations account for only about 2% of leaks. He also mentioned that the peak of data leaks occurred in 2023, while the number of incidents slightly decreased in 2024.

“The situation has long been dire. According to our data, about 3.5 billion records are publicly available. Unfortunately, around 90% of the adult population has some of their personal data accessible online in one form or another,” Kuznetsov said.

Record Number of Scam Calls in 2024

Sberbank specialists also recorded a record number of fraudulent phone calls in 2024. “At one point, around February to March, we saw a peak in phone calls—about 20 million attempts to reach Russian citizens per day. Such a surge in phone scams has never been seen before. Now, this number has dropped to about 6–6.5 million calls per day,” Kuznetsov reported. He added that scam calls have become more professional and fraud schemes more sophisticated.

Financial Losses from Cybercrime

According to Sberbank, it is expected that in 2024, scammers will steal around 250 billion rubles from Russian citizens. Kuznetsov also stated that by the end of this year, the total damage to the Russian economy from cyberattacks in 2023 and 2024, “in the context of cyberwarfare,” could reach approximately one trillion rubles.
