Blockchain Industry Has Lost Over $13.6 Billion to 330 Hacks Since 2012
According to experts at Atlas VPN, since 2012, the blockchain industry has lost more than $13.6 billion as a result of 330 hacker attacks. Decentralized applications (dApps) running on the EOS blockchain platform were the most frequently targeted, with 117 incidents resulting in $28.2 million in losses.
In the Ethereum ecosystem, there were 33 attacks on dApps, which brought hackers $364 million. Cryptocurrency exchanges suffered 87 successful breaches, with total losses reaching $4.8 billion.
The TRON ecosystem also experienced multiple attacks on decentralized applications. In total, cybercriminals carried out 21 successful attacks on TRON apps, stealing $1.22 million (about $58,300 per breach).
Digital asset storage services faced 36 attacks, resulting in combined losses of $7.19 billion. Over eight years, hackers earned $45.8 million from 28 blockchain breaches.
Researchers calculated that from January to June 2019, the blockchain industry suffered 94 successful hacker attacks. In the first half of 2020, this number dropped to 31.
