Rostelecom Reports 2.5-Fold Increase in DDoS Attacks on Russian Companies

Experts from Rostelecom have released a study showing a significant rise in the number of DDoS attacks targeting Russian companies. Cybercriminals have primarily focused on financial institutions, the public sector, and online retail.

Key Findings from the Report

• The number of DDoS attacks increased by 2.5 times compared to the previous period.
• There was a decrease in attacks on the gaming industry and data centers, which were among the main targets last year.
• Moscow stands out geographically, accounting for 60% of all cyber incidents, while no other region exceeds a 7% share. The capital also experienced the most powerful attacks, with an average bandwidth of 70 Gbps.

Targeted Sectors

• Banks: The number of attacks on banks jumped 3.5 times, including some of the top 20 credit organizations.
• Online Retail: This sector saw 20% more DDoS attacks than in the previous period.
• Public Sector: DDoS attacks on government organizations increased by 17%. In August and September, the number of attacks on the public sector doubled compared to the same period last year.

Attack Intensity and Duration

• The average power of DDoS attacks grew by 26%.
• The most powerful attack in 2021 surpassed the peak levels of the first three quarters of 2020.
• The longest recorded attack lasted 4.5 days.

Rostelecom experts expect another surge in DDoS campaigns by the end of the year.
