Roskomnadzor Threatens to Slow Down Google Services

The Russian communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has warned that it may forcibly slow down Google’s services due to the volume and duration of prohibited content available through the search engine. This statement was made to TASS by Roskomnadzor’s press service.

According to the regulator, Google fails to remove between 20% and 30% of links to websites containing terrorist and extremist materials, child pornography, online drug stores, and other illegal content. Roskomnadzor has sent Google over 26,000 notifications demanding the removal of unlawful information that causes significant harm to Russian citizens.

If Google does not comply with the requirement to remove illegal content within 24 hours, the search engine faces a fine ranging from 800,000 to 4 million rubles.

The regulator emphasized that it may slow down Google’s operations based on the amount of still-accessible prohibited content, including child pornography, scenes of brutal animal killings, calls for suicide, participation in illegal protests, materials about drugs, and content related to terrorist and extremist organizations.
