Tor Browser 14.0 Released: Key Updates and Platform Support

Tor Browser 14.0 Release Overview

The specialized Tor Browser 14.0 has been released, featuring a transition to the Firefox 128 ESR branch. Tor Browser is focused on privacy and security, with all traffic routed exclusively through the Tor network. Direct connections via the system’s standard network interface are not possible (in the event of a browser compromise, attackers could access system network settings, so for complete leak prevention, products like Whonix are recommended). Tor Browser builds are available for Linux, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Privacy and Security Features

  • HTTPS Only Mode: Enabled by default to encrypt traffic on all sites where possible.
  • NoScript Extension: Included to reduce JavaScript-based attack risks and block plugins by default.
  • Traffic Obfuscation: Uses fteproxy and obfs4proxy to bypass censorship and traffic inspection.
  • Alternative Transports: Provided for encrypted communication in environments that block all traffic except HTTP.
  • Tracking Protection: APIs such as WebGL, WebGL2, WebAudio, Social, SpeechSynthesis, Touch, AudioContext, HTMLMediaElement, Mediastream, Canvas, SharedWorker, WebAudio, Permissions, MediaDevices.enumerateDevices, and screen.orientation are disabled or restricted. Telemetry, Pocket, Reader View, HTTP Alternative-Services, MozTCPSocket, “link rel=preconnect,” and libmdns are also disabled or modified to prevent tracking and fingerprinting.

What’s New in Version 14.0

  • Upgraded to Firefox 128 ESR: Previously based on Firefox 115, the new version includes a full audit of Firefox changes, with over 200 potential privacy and security issues analyzed and resolved.
  • Android Improvements: The Android version now features a “New circuit” button in the menu, allowing users to refresh the Tor circuit for a specific site (making the site request appear as if from a different user and IP address). Previously, this function was accessed via a fixed notification in the Android notification area, but it is now integrated into the main Tor Browser menu.

Platform Support and Updates

After Mozilla extended the Firefox 115 ESR branch’s support at least until March 2025, the Tor Browser team has also decided to continue supporting the Tor Browser 13.5 branch. This branch maintains compatibility with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, as well as macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14. As a result, the update to Tor Browser 14.0 will be offered only to users on Linux, Windows 10 and newer, and macOS 10.15 and newer. Users on older Windows and macOS versions will remain on Tor Browser 13.5.
