Tails 4.9 and Tor Browser 9.5.3 Released

The specialized Linux distribution Tails 4.9 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been released. Based on Debian packages, Tails is designed to provide anonymous internet access. Anonymity in Tails is achieved through the Tor network. By default, all connections except those routed through Tor are blocked by a packet filter. User data persistence between sessions is protected with encryption. The new release is available as a 1 GB ISO image that can run in Live mode.

What’s New in Tails 4.9

  • The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.7.6 (previously 5.6).
  • New versions of Tor Browser (9.5.3) and Thunderbird (68.10.0) are included.
  • The administrator password now allows characters beyond A–Z, a–z, 1–9, and _@%+=:,./-.
  • The keyboard layout automatically matches the language selected on the Welcome Screen.
  • Issues with launching Tails using the toram boot option have been resolved.

Tor Browser 9.5.3 Highlights

Alongside Tails 4.9, the new Tor Browser 9.5.3 has also been released, focusing on anonymity, security, and privacy. This release is synchronized with the Firefox 68.11.0 ESR codebase, which addresses seven security vulnerabilities. The NoScript extension has been updated to version 11.0.34. The Tor package itself has been updated to version 0.4.3.6, which fixes a DoS vulnerability.
