Tails 3.11 and Tor Browser 8.0.4 Released
The latest release of the specialized Tails 3.11 distribution (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) is now available. Tails is based on Debian and is designed to provide anonymous internet access. Anonymity in Tails is achieved through the Tor network. By default, all connections except those routed through Tor are blocked by a packet filter. User data persistence between sessions is protected with encryption. The new ISO image, sized at 1.2 GB, is ready for download and can be run in Live mode.
What’s New in Tails 3.11
- A new dialog has been added to confirm the application of automatically downloaded updates.
- Tails now checks if it is running inside a virtual machine and displays a warning about reduced security when virtualization is detected.
- The automatic encryption feature in Thunderbird has been disabled to prevent users from mistakenly believing that all sent data is always encrypted.
- Updated software versions: Linux kernel 4.18.20, Tor Browser 8.0.4, and Thunderbird 60.3.0.
Tor Browser 8.0.4: Enhanced Privacy and Security
Alongside the Tails update, a new version of the Tor Browser (8.0.4) has been released, focusing on anonymity, security, and privacy. This release is synchronized with Firefox 60.4.0 ESR, which addresses 10 critical vulnerabilities (grouped under CVE-2018-12405). Other updates include:
- Tor 0.3.4.9
- OpenSSL 1.0.2q
- Torbutton 2.0.9
- HTTPS Everywhere 2018.10.31
- NoScript 10.2.0
Additional improvements:
- Protection against protocol version probing attacks has been backported from the experimental 8.5 branch.
- Issues with reproducible builds in the Stylo CSS engine have been resolved.
- On Windows, sandbox isolation has been reverted to level 4 (the default in Firefox) due to issues with Tor Launcher.
- The non-functional FTE bridge has been removed from Linux builds.
