GrayShift Developers Launch New Spy App for iPhone Hacking
GrayShift, the company that gained notoriety in 2018 for announcing the GrayKey device—designed to unlock secured iPhones for law enforcement—has developed a new spy application to further aid in bypassing Apple’s security measures. While Apple has since strengthened the protection of its devices, hackers have also advanced, adding new tools to their arsenal to facilitate the unlocking of iPhones.
Introducing Hide UI: A New Tool for Law Enforcement
According to Western media reports, GrayShift developed software called Hide UI about a year ago. This application helps police and intelligence agencies determine an iPhone’s passcode much more quickly. The spyware is installed on an iPhone via the GrayKey device and monitors the data entered by the user. When the user enters their passcode, Hide UI saves it in a text file, which can be accessed the next time the iPhone is connected to GrayKey.
Apple’s Stance and Law Enforcement’s Workarounds
Apple has repeatedly refused to assist law enforcement in unlocking its devices. In the absence of cooperation from Apple, law enforcement agencies have relied on companies like GrayShift to find vulnerabilities in Apple’s hardware and software, creating tools that can bypass iPhone security features.
Concerns Over Secrecy and Use
The secrecy surrounding the development of Hide UI has raised concerns among activists and lawyers. However, police representatives have assured journalists that Hide UI has never been used without a warrant. An anonymous source also noted that the software often “glitched,” and it was sometimes easier to persuade suspects to reveal their passcodes themselves. Apple has not commented on the reports about the new spyware.
