Mobile Renault Duster Units to Track Public Wi-Fi Allowing Banned Content
The Main Radio Frequency Center (GRChTs), a subsidiary of Roskomnadzor responsible for implementing the Russian internet isolation law, has allocated over 57 million rubles for four mobile communication network monitoring units. This information was discovered by MBK Media on the government procurement portal.
To carry out this task, four Renault Duster vehicles will be specially equipped and deployed across four federal districts: Northwestern, Volga, Southern, and Ural.
Purpose and Capabilities of the Monitoring Units
The mobile units are designed to monitor cellular networks, wireless broadband access, and both digital and analog radio and television broadcasting. A key function will be scanning public Wi-Fi networks to check for access to “banned resources” listed in the Roskomnadzor registry.
Additionally, these units will be able to:
- Locate detected signals (direction finding)
- Record the state of the electromagnetic environment
- Identify sources of radio emissions
Each unit will be operated by a single operator, and the expected service life of the equipment is at least 10 years.
