Programmer Creates Self-Destructing USB Drive Capable of Installing Malware

Programmer Develops Self-Destructing USB Drive

A programmer known by the pseudonym MG has engineered a self-destructing USB drive from a standard flash drive, with the added capability of installing malicious code onto a victim’s computer.

In his blog, MG detailed the process of creating the device. The USB drive was modified using an ATtiny 85 chip, which transforms a regular flash drive into a USB Rubber Ducky—a special device that a computer recognizes as a USB keyboard. This allows the device to easily inject malicious code into the target system.

The programmer then found a way to modify the power delivery mechanism so that the device would explode a certain amount of time after being connected to a computer.

For safety reasons, the developer did not include the exact steps required to trigger the explosion in his instructions.
