How to Use Android for Communication on the Tor Network

Using Android for Communication on the Tor Network

The first step is to download and install F-Droid, an open-source app repository. After installing F-Droid, wait for the repository to update. Then, use it to download the following apps:

  • Conversations – A Jabber client with a simple, user-friendly, and attractive interface. It supports PGP (OpenKeyChain), OTR, and OMEMO encryption.
  • OpenKeyChain – An easy-to-use tool for managing PGP keys. This app works seamlessly with Conversations.
  • K-9 Mail – An email client.
  • KeePassDroid – A convenient app for managing passwords.

Downloaded everything? Let’s move on!

For browsing with Tor, you’ll need Orbot and Orfox. Alternatively, you can use Firefox with the following changes in about:config:

  • network.proxy.socks – 127.0.0.1
  • network.proxy.socks_port – 9050
  • network.proxy.socks_remote_dns – true
  • network.proxy.type – 1
  • media.peerconnection.enabled – false

Instead of the Orbot + Orfox/Firefox combination, you can also use the Fire.onion browser.

That’s it! I personally use all the apps listed above. For a more complete setup, you can also download the MEGA cloud storage app and a Bitcoin wallet of your choice, such as Blockchain or Electrum.

Stay safe and enjoy secure communication!
