Opera GX Launches “Fake My History” Feature for Privacy After Inactivity
Opera GX, the gamer-focused web browser, has introduced a new feature called Fake My History. This function activates if the user has not used the browser for two weeks. Instead of simply clearing your browsing history, it replaces it with a fictional and wholesome version, including search queries like “how to build a birdhouse” or “how to become a blood donor.”
Why Was “Fake My History” Created?
The developers explain that this feature was designed for users who worry that, in the event of their death, their loved ones might see their entire internet history, including any questionable sites. According to the developers, “If your curious partner, parent, or roommate opens Opera GX and checks your history after your passing, they’ll be impressed by your fake but impeccable online tastes and charmingly fabricated achievements that now fill your digital past.”
How Does It Work?
When activated, Fake My History completely wipes your list of visited sites and adds search queries that “your grandmother would be proud of.” Examples include:
- Local volunteer opportunities
- Free online courses for personal growth
- How to build a birdhouse
You can enable this feature in the settings (opera://history
). You don’t have to wait two weeks—users can “play dead” at any time by turning on Fake My History immediately.
