New York Tops the List of Cities by Cannabis Consumption

According to a recent study, New York City residents consume 62.3 tons of cannabis per year, making it the world’s leading city for cannabis consumption. The research was conducted by the health information resource CFAH, which collected cannabis data from 140 cities worldwide.

Global Cannabis Consumption Rankings

In addition to identifying the cities with the highest cannabis consumption, the study also examined where cannabis is most and least expensive. New York stands out significantly, surpassing other cities by a wide margin. Sydney, Australia, took second place with 45.8 tons per year, despite cannabis being illegal there—about 17 tons less than New York. Los Angeles ranked third with 35 tons per year, followed by Chicago (24.9 tons) and Rome (21.9 tons).

Cities with the Most Expensive Cannabis

Cannabis is illegal and strictly criminalized in Japan, but those who still want to use it must pay a high price. Tokyo is considered the city with the most expensive cannabis, at $33.80 per gram. Dublin (Ireland) and Tallinn (Estonia) follow with prices of $22.50 and $22.10 per gram, respectively. Moscow ranks seventh in this list, with cannabis costing $20 per gram.

Cities with the Cheapest Cannabis

The cheapest cannabis can be found in Montreal, Canada, at just $5.90 per gram. Bangalore (India) and Notre-Dame (Canada) follow, with prices of $6.00 and $6.20 per gram, respectively.
