NLP Technique: The Intuitive Decision-Making Pendulum Method
Decision-making in this method is based on using a pendulum. What do you need to start connecting with your intuition? In the beginning, a pendulum can help you with this process.
What Can Be Used as a Pendulum?
You can use a special stone on a string (often sold in stores with crystals, incense, etc.), a pendant on a chain, or any small object suspended on a string (about 8–12 inches long). The main thing is that you feel comfortable using this small item.
Each time you use the pendulum, you should ask no more than one or two questions, as there is always a specific sequence of actions to follow.
Calibration in NLP
In NLP, we always start with calibration. But what does calibration mean? It’s when you pay close attention to the smallest nuances and differences you notice in behavior—in this case, the pendulum’s movements.
First, you set up an “interface” for communicating with your unconscious mind. This means you make an agreement with your unconscious, and you’ll need to do this each time, as the pendulum may behave differently on different days.
How to Calibrate “Yes” and “No” Answers
To begin, you need to understand and calibrate what a “Yes” and a “No” answer look like. Personally, I address my unconscious like a psychiatrist might: “Dear unconscious.” You can address it however you like—dear inner voice, dear inner strength, etc.
Here’s how to start:
- Hold your arm out with the pendulum in front of you and say, “Dear unconscious, please show me a ‘Yes’ answer.” Wait a moment and observe how the pendulum swings—maybe left to right, for example. Remember this movement.
- Next, ask for a “No” answer and observe the movement—maybe it swings forward and backward, or in a circle. This will be noticeably different from the “Yes” answer.
Once you’ve calibrated and understood the answers, you can ask your question.
What Kind of Questions Can You Ask?
You should ask questions that can be answered clearly and simply with “Yes” or “No.” The question should be about you and your life.
Examples of suitable questions include:
- Should I travel somewhere or not?
- Should I change my job or not?
- Should I make a purchase or not?
Basically, anything that requires a clear answer.
What Questions Should You Avoid?
Avoid questions that can be answered ambiguously or that already include a negation.
Finishing the Process
Always thank your unconscious at the end. Do this alone, without sarcasm or unnecessary thoughts. You’ll see how this method works and how your unconscious gives you guidance.
The intuitive decision-making method using a pendulum is not fortune-telling. It’s an “upgrade” to your unconscious mind’s interface. You’re making an agreement with yourself, because intuition doesn’t live in the pendulum—it lives within you and your entire body.
