Calgary Supermarkets Receive Licenses to Sell Recreational Marijuana

Several Calgary Supermarkets Approved to Sell Recreational Marijuana

Due to Canada’s national legalization of recreational marijuana, which allows each province to set its own regulations for local markets, several supermarkets in the Calgary, Alberta area have received permits to sell marijuana on their premises.

According to recent reports from the city, 11 Calgary Co-Op supermarkets—including one located at a gas station—have been granted licenses to sell recreational marijuana. In addition, 7 Real Canadian Superstore locations and one Real Canadian Liquor Store have also received permits. All of these retail chains spent several months negotiating with the provincial government to secure the necessary licenses.

Marijuana Sales Coming to Major Shopping Centers

As a result, stores openly selling marijuana alongside groceries will soon appear in four of Calgary’s largest shopping centers: Chinook Centre, Southcentre Mall, Deerfoot City Mall, and Midnapore Mall. Another permit was granted to a supermarket that will be located in the new Legacy shopping center, which is nearing completion in the city’s southeast district.

Additional Licenses and Specialized Stores

Additionally, three Second Cup locations have received licenses to sell therapeutic marijuana under the new “National Access to Cannabis Medicine” program. A separate, specialized recreational marijuana store will also open at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Calgary, sponsored by Westleaf.

Citywide Licensing Update

As of August 9, city authorities had approved 155 out of 187 applications submitted since last April. Of these, 83 have already been formally approved, while another 11 applications are still under review.
