Non-Alcoholic Cannabis Wine: A New Way to Get High

For years, the world has seen a growing number of products containing cannabis. Cannabis has been added to everything from coffee tablets and cotton candy to spicy pumpkin chocolate, cannabis-infused milk, and even frozen pizza topped with cannabis. Alcoholic drinks with cannabis are no longer a novelty either. There are already beers and wines with cannabis, but these only enhance the effects of alcohol rather than actually getting you high.

Now, everything is changing thanks to the world’s first non-alcoholic cannabis wine.

Rebel Coast Winery Launches Cannabis Sauvignon Blanc

California’s Rebel Coast Winery is set to start selling cannabis-infused Sauvignon Blanc as early as January 2018. This comes just as a new law goes into effect in California, allowing adults to legally use cannabis for recreational purposes.

Each bottle of Sauvignon Blanc will contain 16 milligrams of THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis), which breaks down to four milligrams per serving. California law allows up to 10 milligrams of cannabis per serving.

“With this wine, you can get high after just a few glasses. Our goal is a giggly and relaxed consumer,” the winery’s website states.

The winemakers claim that the effects of cannabis kick in about 15 minutes after finishing a glass. However, just like with regular alcohol, you should expect a nasty hangover the next day.

How Is Cannabis Wine Made?

Rebel Coast Winery produces its Sauvignon Blanc just like traditional wine. After removing the alcohol, each bottle is infused with organic THC and terpenes (the oils that give cannabis its distinctive aroma). As a result, the drink will have a familiar cannabis scent.

Interestingly, because there’s no smoke involved, this wine doesn’t have the typical, easily recognizable smell of cannabis.

What Does Cannabis Wine Taste Like?

According to the winery, the Sauvignon Blanc will taste similar to traditional wine, with a bright citrus aroma. There will be no cannabis aftertaste.

One bottle will cost $59.99 (£44.70), so you’ll want to handle it with care.

Where and When Can You Buy It?

California residents over 21 can pre-order a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc on the Rebel Coast Winery website. Orders will be fulfilled in January after the new law takes effect. The winery also plans to open more than 500 cannabis shops across California.

They are interested in expanding to other U.S. states once cannabis use becomes legal there.

What’s Next for Cannabis Wine?

In 2018, the company plans to launch production and sales of cannabis-infused rosé and sparkling wine. They will also release a line of wines containing medicinal cannabis that doesn’t produce a high.

Of course, many people are excited about cannabis becoming legal, but it’s important to remember that cannabis is much less dangerous than the world’s most widely consumed drug—alcohol.
