Russian Interior Ministry Proposes Stricter Penalties for Bank Card Theft
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has prepared a draft law aimed at increasing penalties for stealing funds from bank accounts. This announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladimir Kolokoltsev. At this time, no specific details or provisions of the document have been disclosed.
Kolokoltsev noted that the number of cyber fraud incidents involving modern technologies is steadily rising.
“Completely new types of fraud are developing, so we are training specialized personnel to respond more effectively to changes and the evolution of crime,” the minister was quoted as saying by kommersant.ru.
Among other cyber threats, Kolokoltsev expressed concern about criminals using cryptocurrencies.
“People involved in the drug trade are increasingly turning to cryptocurrency. This is indeed a fact,” emphasized the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
It is worth noting that last week, Sberbank identified the reasons why popular bank card fraud schemes have become so successful. According to the financial institution, more than 76% of fraudulent transactions occurred due to users’ simple trustfulness.
It turns out that many Russians simply reveal their PIN codes and other card details themselves, responding to common scam messages about card blocking.
