Mozilla Firefox Named the Most Secure Browser
The German Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, BSI) has evaluated several popular web browsers for compliance with modern security standards. The browsers tested included Mozilla Firefox 68, Google Chrome 76, Microsoft Internet Explorer 11, and Microsoft Edge 44.
According to the BSI, Mozilla Firefox received the highest marks and was the only browser to meet all the minimum requirements for essential security features. The audit was conducted using the guidelines outlined in the BSI’s “Modern Secure Browsers” manual, published in September of this year. The BSI typically uses this manual to advise government agencies and private companies on choosing secure browsers.
Why Firefox Stands Out
BSI found that Firefox is the only browser supporting all the minimum requirements specified in their guidelines. Other browsers failed to meet certain criteria due to missing features, such as:
- Master password support (missing in Chrome, IE, Edge)
- Built-in update mechanism (missing in IE)
- Ability to block telemetry data collection (missing in Chrome, IE, Edge)
- Domain restriction rules support (missing in IE)
- Content security policy support (missing in IE)
- Subresource integrity support (missing in IE)
- Support for browser profiles and different configurations (missing in IE, Edge)
- Organizational transparency (missing in Chrome, IE, Edge)
These findings highlight Firefox’s commitment to security and transparency, making it the top choice for users and organizations concerned about online safety.
