Mozilla to Introduce Social Media Tracker Protection in Firefox
Mozilla is set to add a new feature to the Firefox browser that will protect users from social media trackers. This feature is currently in development and is scheduled to be included in Firefox version 70, which is expected to be released in October 2019.
How the New Protection Works
According to information posted on the Bugzilla website, the social media tracker protection will be placed in a separate category called “Social media trackers.” The feature will be enabled by default under the standard protection settings. However, Firefox will not forcibly block all trackers if doing so could break website functionality.
Which Trackers Will Be Blocked?
The new feature will block trackers on domains associated with the following social media sites and services:
- FacebookFacebook launched an official Tor mirror in 2014, becoming the first major tech company to provide direct access through onion routing. The mirror allows users to bypass censorship, secure their connections, and avoid phishing risks while using the platform. This step also underscored Facebook’s recognition of free expression and inspired other outlets like the BBC and ProPublica to create their own Tor versions. More
