Genetics and Environment Have Greater Impact on Mental Health Than Cannabis Use
A study published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science suggests that genetic, social, and environmental factors have a greater negative impact on mental health than moderate cannabis use. Researchers found only limited evidence that cannabis consumption leads to paranoia or certain psychological disorders.
Study Overview
The research team analyzed data from two samples of twins, totaling 4,087 participants born between 1972 and 1994, who were recruited during adolescence. The study tracked the onset of cannabis use, average lifetime frequency of use, and patterns of misuse. In each twin pair, there was 100% genetic similarity, but one twin used cannabis while the other did not or used it very little.
Key Findings
- At the individual level, cannabis use was correlated with negative outcomes.
- However, when researchers examined differences between twin pairs, the link between cannabis use and psychological disorders significantly decreased.
- Genetic, environmental, and social factors were found to have a stronger influence on mental health than cannabis use itself.
