NLP: The Pendulum Method for Intuitive Decision-Making
Decision-making can be guided by the pendulum method, a simple technique to help you connect with your intuition. If you want to start trusting your inner voice, using a pendulum can be a helpful first step.
What Can Be Used as a Pendulum?
You can use a special stone on a string (often sold in stores with crystals and incense), a pendant on a chain, or any small object suspended from a string about 8-12 inches long. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable using it.
When using the pendulum, limit yourself to one or two questions at a time, as there is a specific sequence of actions to follow.
Calibration in NLP
In NLP, we always start with calibration. Calibration means paying close attention to the smallest nuances and differences in behavior. When calibrating the pendulum, you focus on its movements.
First, you need to set up your “interface” for communicating with your subconscious. This means you make an agreement with your subconscious every time, as the pendulum may behave differently on different days.
How to Calibrate “Yes” and “No” Answers
Begin by determining what a “Yes” and a “No” look like for you. For example, you might address your subconscious as, “Dear subconscious,” or use any phrase that feels right to you, such as “my inner voice” or “my inner strength.”
Hold your arm out with the pendulum and say, “Dear subconscious, please show me a ‘Yes’ answer.” Wait and observe the pendulum’s movement—maybe it swings left to right. Remember this motion. Then, ask for a “No” answer and observe—perhaps it swings forward and back, or in a circle. This movement will be clearly different from the “Yes.”
Asking Questions
Once you’ve calibrated your answers, you can ask your question. The question should be clear and straightforward, allowing for a “Yes” or “No” answer. It should relate directly to you and your life. For example, you might ask whether you should travel somewhere, change jobs, make a purchase, and so on—anything that requires a clear answer.
What Questions Should You Avoid?
Avoid questions that are ambiguous or contain a negative within them. Stick to questions that can be answered simply and directly.
Thank Your Subconscious
Always thank your subconscious at the end. Do this privately, without sarcasm or stray thoughts. You’ll see how this method works and how your subconscious guides you.
The pendulum method for intuitive decision-making is not fortune-telling. It’s an “upgrade” to your subconscious interface. You’re making an agreement with yourself, because intuition doesn’t live in the pendulum—it lives within you and your entire body.
