775,000 Telegram Users’ Phone Numbers Leaked as Alleged “Eye of God” Client Database
A file containing the personal data of hundreds of thousands of Telegram users, allegedly subscribers of the Telegram search service “Eye of God,” has been found freely available online. The “Information Leaks” channel reports that this data is not part of any known Telegram database and was most likely collected by parsing the messenger.
The leaked database contains 774,871 records with information on Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian Telegram users. According to Kommersant, the database is already being distributed on specialized forums. Each record includes a personal identifier, phone number, username, first name, and last name as registered in the messenger.
Legal Action Against “Eye of God”
Last month, Roskomnadzor filed a lawsuit against “Eye of God,” stating that the service collects, processes, and distributes citizens’ personal data without their consent, violating their rights and the personal data law. On July 1, the Tagansky District Court reviewed the regulator’s claim and declared the search service’s activities illegal. This decision allowed Roskomnadzor to add “Eye of God” to the Register of Personal Data Rights Violators, and Telegram is now required to block the service.
Previous Telegram Data Leaks
This is not the first time Telegram databases have been leaked. A year ago, unknown individuals published a database containing IDs, usernames, and phone numbers of four million Telegram users on an underground forum. Telegram specialists verified the authenticity of the information but noted that most of the accounts were no longer active.
