Nvidia Investigates Potential Cyberattack
American technology company Nvidia has announced that it is currently investigating an “incident” that caused some of its systems to be down for two days. The first report of the suspected attack came last Friday from the British publication The Telegraph, which stated that Nvidia experienced significant disruptions to its email services and developer tools.
Due to widespread rumors circulating online and in the media, Nvidia representatives issued a statement:
“We are investigating the incident. Our business and commercial activities continue without interruption. While we are working to assess the nature and scope of the event, we currently do not have any additional information to share,” company representatives said.
Nvidia also declined to answer further questions about the scale of the attack or whether the incident was related to ransomware.
According to Bleeping Computer, insider sources have described the incident as a “complete compromise” of Nvidia’s internal systems.
Making matters worse, the hacker group Lapsus$ has claimed responsibility for the alleged attack, stating that they stole over 1 TB of data from Nvidia’s network. The hackers also reportedly leaked data containing password hashes for all company employees. Journalists have not yet been able to confirm or deny the authenticity of this information.
Interestingly, according to Vx-underground, Nvidia not only detected the hackers’ attack but also retaliated by compromising the attackers’ server, deleting some files, and encrypting all remaining data on the disks.
