Can CBD Become an Antibiotic?
The Research Center at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland has conducted a study revealing that CBD (cannabidiol) can act against bacterial strains, including staphylococcus and streptococcus. CBD also showed some effectiveness against bacterial strains that have developed resistance to other types of antibiotics.
βWe still donβt know how it works; itβs possible that cannabidiol has a unique mechanism of action, since it is effective against bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics,β said lead chemist and research head Mark Blaskovich.
Blaskovich added that for a CBD-based drug to be considered a useful antibiotic, further studies must demonstrate its ability to treat complex tissue infections.
Other Potential Medical Uses of CBD
Two additional studies have highlighted other potential medical applications for CBD. The Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis, found positive effects of CBD against seizures. In their experiment, laboratory rats suffering from seizures were given both herbal and synthetic cannabidiol compounds. As a result, the rats experienced a decrease in the frequency and severity of their symptoms.
The American Journal of Psychiatry published a study showing that Epidiolex, a prescription drug based on cannabidiol, is effective in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms in people trying to overcome opioid addiction.
Medical findings on the effectiveness of CBD are especially welcomed as governments continue to refine the role of marijuana in the legal system.
