Spanish Authorities Destroy Largest MJ Plantation in Europe

In northern Spain, law enforcement discovered 67 hectares of fields planted with MJ. The owner claimed everything was within the law, but secretly planned to supply raw material for further processing into CBD—which is prohibited in Spain. As a result, he had to say goodbye to both his fields and his freedom.

The Spanish Civil Guard destroyed 415,000 MJ plants worth about €100 million (8.7 billion rubles) during an operation to eliminate what they called “the largest illegal cannabis plantation” on the European continent. The plantation was located in the rural area of the northern province of Navarre, spread across 11 fields totaling 67 hectares.

Authorities stated that the plantation owner initially presented his operation as a legal MJ cultivation business. However, it was later discovered that he planned to supply large quantities of raw material to Italian and Swiss factories for CBD processing. During searches, law enforcement found about 50 tons of MJ in a facility intended for drying.

While the sale and consumption of CBD are legal in Spain and most of Europe, local laws still prohibit growing MJ for anything other than industrial purposes—such as textile or seed production. Cultivating MJ for CBD extraction or any other cannabis derivatives is considered a criminal offense.

The investigation began in mid-2021, when authorities discovered one of the first fields. So far, three people have been detained.

Globally and historically, the discovered plantation is not the largest. In 2011, the Mexican military found an MJ plantation covering 121 hectares, which remains the largest ever found. Even the largest legal cannabis farms do not exceed 90 hectares in planted area.
