INTERPOL Launches Global Crackdown on Cybercrime

INTERPOL Takes Action Against International Cybercrime

Approximately 1,300 suspicious IP addresses or URLs were identified during a global INTERPOL operation targeting phishing, malware attacks, and ransomware. Operation “Synergy,” which ran from September to November 2023, was launched in response to the clear rise, escalation, and professionalization of transnational cybercrime, as well as the need for coordinated action against emerging cyber threats.

The operation involved law enforcement agencies from 55 countries and several private companies. Seventy percent of the identified command and control (C2) servers—mainly in Europe, Hong Kong, and Singapore—were taken down, while other servers are currently under the control of security services.

In addition to arresting 31 cybercrime suspects, INTERPOL identified another 70 individuals believed to be responsible for phishing attacks, the distribution of banking malware, and ransomware. The investigation also uncovered major cybercriminal groups, though their names and origins have not been disclosed.

Bernardo Pillot, Assistant Director of INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate, stated:

“The results of this operation, achieved through the collective efforts of many countries and partners, demonstrate our unwavering commitment to protecting the digital space. By dismantling the infrastructure behind phishing, banking malware, and ransomware attacks, we are one step closer to safeguarding our digital ecosystems and ensuring a safer and more secure online experience for everyone.”
