Citizens Without Biometric Data to Face Restrictions on Government Services
The Ministry of Digital Development of Russia plans to intensify the collection of biometric data from Russian citizens. According to a report by “Kommersant,” citing its own sources, the ministry aims to increase the number of records in the Unified Biometric System (UBS) from 164,000 to 70 million within two years.
During a recent meeting at the Ministry of Digital Development, the idea was raised to encourage the population to fill the UBS database through “administrative measures.” Specifically, it was proposed to restrict remote access to certain government services for citizens who have not submitted their biometric data.
By providing their biometric data, citizens would be able to use services such as facial recognition payments, access notary services, or take university exams remotely.
Meanwhile, the company “Rostelecom” is considering launching a mobile application to facilitate the collection of biometric data.
The government acknowledges that the collection of biometric data in Russia is progressing very slowly.
