Google Acknowledges ChatGPT as a Potential Replacement
Recently released, the ChatGPT chatbot has demonstrated its ability to make a major breakthrough in the industry. Unlike traditional search engines that provide a list of internet links, ChatGPT can deliver information in clear, simple sentences. It can explain concepts in ways that are easy for people to understand and even generate ideas from scratch, including business strategies, advertising copy, blog topics, and vacation plans.
The launch of ChatGPT prompted Google’s leadership to declare a “code red.” The company is approaching a moment feared by the biggest Silicon Valley firms—a global technological shift that could disrupt their business models.
Google Faces a Serious Threat to Its Core Business
For over 20 years, Google’s search engine has served as the world’s main gateway to the internet. But with new chatbot technology poised to reinvent or even replace traditional search engines, Google may be facing the first serious threat to its core search business. One Google executive called these efforts “critical to the future of Google.”
Google has been working on chatbots for several years and, like other major tech companies, has been actively developing artificial intelligence technologies. In fact, Google has already created a chatbot that can compete with ChatGPT. The technology behind OpenAI’s chatbot was originally developed by researchers at Google.
Google’s AI Chatbot and Business Challenges
Google’s LaMDA chatbot attracted significant attention when Google engineer Blake Lemoine claimed that LaMDA had its own consciousness. However, Google may be reluctant to use AI technology as a replacement for online search because it is not well-suited for delivering targeted advertising, which accounted for over 80% of the company’s revenue last year.
Even if Google perfects its chatbots, it faces another challenge: will this technology make up for the company’s lucrative search advertising? If a chatbot answers queries with short sentences, users have less reason to click on sponsored links.
Google’s Next Steps
Google representatives have stated that the company plans to release technology that uses its chatbot as a cloud computing service for third-party businesses and may incorporate this technology into basic customer support tasks. Google is already working to improve its search engine using the same technology that powers the LaMDA and ChatGPT chatbots.
