Firefox to Block All Trackers by Default

Script-blocking features for mining, tracking, and fingerprinting will be introduced in the coming months.

In upcoming versions of the Firefox browser, Mozilla will block scripts for cross-site and other tracking, malicious miners, and fingerprinting scripts by default. These new features will be rolled out in the next few months as part of three new initiatives aimed at protecting user privacy, blocking harmful scripts, and speeding up web page loading times.

Cross-site tracking scripts will be blocked by default starting with Firefox 65. This will be achieved by removing cookies and blocking storage access for third-party scripts.

In addition to cross-site tracking, new versions of the browser will also block malicious scripts by default, including cryptocurrency miners like Coinhive and fingerprinting scripts (which identify users based on their device characteristics and other data). The default cryptocurrency miner blocking feature is already available in other browsers, such as Opera.

Currently, you can test these new features in the Firefox 63 Nightly build. To do this, go to the “Control Center” (to the left of the address bar), select the “Content Blocking” section, and check the boxes next to the relevant options.
